And I noticed it wasn't every time I had turned on my computer it was "slow".

Imagine how frustrating it is to write your email address in a normal pace on the keyboard, just to find it spelled <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">firstname1977gma@il.com instead of <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">firstname1977@gmail.com? Hitting '<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">@'had 0.5 to 1 second delay before it showed up on my screen, while the characters after displayed instantly.

The computer in question runs english Windows 10 x64 with an NVidia GTX1070 card from Asus, and using a norwegian/scandinavian keyboard (Logitech G710+, but model isn't the problem).

Throubleshooting led me to narrow the problem down to my ASUS GPU TweakII v1.4.0.8 (older version probably have the same problems). When I started the program, which was set to auto-start, I was suddenly no able to type @ as fast and often as I could. So far so good. I could just exit the program and all would be fine. But then I would have to start it every time I wanted to tune/overclock my GFX.. not the best workaround.

The problem was/is in the GPU TweakII settings. It seems the combination of scandinavian keyboard layout and keyboard shortcuts in GPU TweakII are the bad mix.

To illustrate it, I've pulled what should be a US and NO keyboard layout from Google images:

NO keyboard layout

Notice that we Scandinavians have several extra characters mapped to one key (and a few extra letters, but thats not important here)? Where US only have one or two characters mapped (normally toggled with SHIFT), we have sometimes three. While lots of people press SHIFT+2 to get @, we have a special key ALT-GR where your right ALT key is. ALT-GR+2 gives us @. And as you can see, ALT-GR+3 is £ and ALT-GR+4 is $ and so on. They are all marked in blue.

I had problem with delayed displaying of @, £ and µ. Normally I wouldn't use £ and µ much so my main annoyance was @.

And if we look at the settings for GPU Tweak II keyboard shortcuts we see that numbers 1 through 3 and letters M,N,U,D are in use. Do you see the problem?

My problem keys @, £ and µ links to keys 2, 3 and M. Just turning off the shortcuts made the delay go away on the first iteration of the characters, but keeping the key pressed would not give me a second @. So the full solution is to

Remap the shortcuts to completely different set of keys. I would recommend start from D and pick a new on to the right

Disable the keyboard shortcuts all together after that.

Finally I have my @, £ and µ keys back ;-)

It's a Intel Core i7-3770K with 32GB DDR4-1600 RAM on an Asus ROG Maximus V Gene mainboard. The chipset is Z77 and so it was more or less the best to get at the time being. I started with two Samsung SSD 830 in RAID-9 and later upgraded to a OCZ RevoDrive3 X2 PCIe SSD for my OS disk.

Fast forward from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10 (v1607) and Intel seems to not have released any Windows 10 supported SATA controller drivers for Z77. Or have they?

It seems that as long as your BIOS has the Intel SATA controller set to AHCI-mode, Windows 10 will install and use the generic '<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Standard SATA controller' and trying to install the latest iRST driver v15.2.0.1020 (latest version as of 2016-12-15) on an AHCI configured Z77-system only gives you an error:

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Platform not supported
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

The good news is that Intel does have driver support for some of the older chipsets; those that have RAID capabilities, which luckily inlcudes Z77.

Taken from https://communities.intel.com/thread/77944 you can read:

Intel® Rapid Storage Technology version 14.6.0.1029 to work with Windows 10 32-bit and 64-bit on motherboards based on Intel Chipsets with RAID capabilities (so far the only version for Windows 10).

What I experienced is that with SATA controller set to RAID-mode Windows 10 v1607 (which I just installed from scratch) comes with a built in Intel Desktop/Workstation/Server Express Chipset SATA RAID Controller v13.2.0.1022 driver:
Last month I upgraded to v16.x and hey, what do you know? A new problem with connection to Crashplan Central.

To make a long story short (read the forum posts), there's a bug (what else is new when it comes to Crashplan and XG) in v16 (including v16.0.1.1) that blocks the crashplan traffic. It's confirmed by Sophos KB (#2) and they say:

In certain situations traffic being passed through the XG firewall may appear be passed through the proxy even when no Web Policy is enabled within the relevant firewall rule and HTTP/HTTPS scanning is disabled."

Both the KB and forumpost (#3) gives a workaround:

Connect to the XG firewall via SSH and select option 4 (Device Console) from the menu

run the below to disable this:
system application_classification microapp-discovery off

Restart Crashplan

PS! I have not checked, nor installed, v16.0.1.2 to confirm it's still there or not. Might do that soon, and update this post.

Before I got around to publish it, Windows 10 was released. So now it will take you all the way from Windows 8 through Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.
As many of you know, Microsoft has released Windows 10 as a free upgrade if you have a legal Windows 7 or 8.x installation, as long as you upgrade during the first year (so by 29th of July 2016).

To upgrade Windows 8 to Windows 10 you have to first upgrade to Windows 8.1. So lets get cracking. I assume you have a clean new Windows 8 ("Home" or Pro) installed.

Shortest path to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1

First, activate Windows 8.

Then configure Windows Update to "Let me decide which updates to download and install"

Check for Windows 8 updates. Windows will want to update the Windows Update Component itself. Update it.

Install the only update you need to get Windows 8.1: 'Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2871389)'. Reboot.

When Windows boots, log in and open Windows Store and click "Update to Windows Update 8.1 for free". Let the process upgrade your computer to Windows 8.1 (this takes a while - downloading, applying, setting up, getting ready.. grab some lunch or something while it downloads and installs)

You can also get the update KB from Microsoft directly: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40098

To upgrade to Windows 10 (free upgrade during the first year of release) you need to have Windows 8.1 installed; se above. I have not tried from Windows 7 directly to Windows 10.

Shortest path from Windows 8.1 (resume from my steps above) to Winows 10

Make sure Windows Updates are configured only to check and not to download updates.

Install the only updates you need to get Windows 8.1:

'Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2976978)'. Windows Compatibility

'Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB3035583)'. This installs the 'Get Windows 10 App'..

Reboot

You should now see the Get Windows 10 app icon in the tray bar. Right click and select 'Get Windows 10'. Then click on 'Reserve your free upgrade'

Since Windows 10 is released in stages to groups of computers, you can, as this is written, speed things up by downloading the Windows 10 Media Creaton Tool here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Run the tool and select 'Create installation media for another PC'. This will download the Windows 10 ISO of your chosing (I use "US English" and 64-bit).

I did not have any luck with the 'Upgrade this PC now' option on the laptop I used to create this guide, but I've used it on another computer just fine. Anyway, I prefer having the ISO for later, and if the 'upgrade this pc' doesn't work you have to download the file again... thats 3GB+ and thats no fun unless you are on 100Mbps+

When the Windows 10 ISO has been downloaded, right click on it and select 'Mount'

Navigate to the Virtual DVD-ROM and start 'setup.exe' in the root of that drive.

I would recommend you select 'Download and install updates (recommended)' (fig. 1)

Let it get ready (fig. 2) and accept licencing (fig. 3)

If you want to keep your files and apps (who wouldn't?) leave the defaults (fig. 4) when it's ready to install

Click install and after some time and restarts (fig. 5) you should have a shiny Windows 10 on your computer (fig. 6 & 7)

I will probably follow up with a new post on some of my initial configuration tips, in regards to privacy concerns and other settings from Microsoft I don't think is good. I will how ever end this post with one tip:

How to delete the Windows 8 backed up OS files

Windows 10 lets you downgrade to Windows 8.1 during the first month. If that's not an option, you can go about and delete the backed up Windows 8.1 OS files. This however is not done with a simple "delete folder" in Windows Explorer, as the files are protected.

Here's how:

Press 'Win + S' to search and type 'Cleanup'

Select 'Disk Cleanup' app (start the app)

When the app starts, click on 'Clean up system files' button. (Need to be administrator or have the admin password)

You will now have an option in the 'Files to delete' list called 'Previous Windows installations'. Select this, and other options if you like, and click OK. This will wipe away the old Windows 8.1 backed up OS files - not your documents or data.

Thats it. A new Windows 10 computer from your old Windows 8 (or 8.1).

When you have upgraded once, you should actually be able to do a clean Windows 10 only install (without upgrades). So it's a good thing to download the ISO as I said in the first place. Please note that you have to do the upgrade once.

Hope this was useful for some of you.

I've got a MFP (multi-function printer) from Dell that I use to scan directly to a shared folder on my computer. For this I use a seperate user that has share/write permissions on a shared folder. I don't want to show this user in the Windows 10 list, so here is how to hide it:

Start regedit and navigate here:

<span style="background-color: #cccccc; font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Create a new sub-KEY under <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Winlogon named '<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">SpecialAccounts'

Create a new sub-KEY under <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">SpecialAccounts named '<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">UserList'

In UserList, create a DWORD (32-bit) and give it the name of the user account. Leave the value at 0.

Log out or Reboot

Update: Verified to work in Windows 10.

In my experience you will still "always" need .NET 2.0 or 3.5 (.NET Framework 3.5 feature set in Windows 8.x includes 3.0 and 2.0 also), so now I always install it righ away.

Most of the solutions on the internet tells you to grab the DVD/Mount ISO and point the 'dism.exe' to the SXS folder and enable it with the source files there. For a lot of us, those files aren't available when you need it, or not at all.

I just had this problem hit me again, as I just started a new consultancy assignment and got a new laptop from the work place I had to use. It came already installed with Windows 8.1 (over the network) and with all software and updates. Hence, enabling .NET Framework 3.5 (which wasn't enabled) I hit an error while installing from Windows Update: Error: 0x800F0906.

A long story short, here is what I did to actually make my computer enable .NET Framework 3.5 via Windows Update. The computer was also configured to use WSUS, but it was not locked down to deny me installing updates from Windows Updates (more/newer than those updates the IT department had approved). So if you are locked to only local WSUS this might not work. Or you can beg your IT department to enable this Group Policy (see below).

Uninstall these three security updates (or those that was on my system):

KB2966826

KB2966827

KB2966828

In Local Group Policy, I enabled 'Specify settings for optional component installation and component repair' under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System. See illustration below.

Just to be sure settings were in effect, I rebooted. I could probably just force a gpupdate as well..

My next attempt to install .NET Framework 3.5 was suddenly a success!!
I'm a bit sceptical since I can't find the latest version on Intel.com but thought I'd post the link here so I can go back later and have a look. It might be legit, it might not.
The underlying Linux OS (QTS) does support it, and there should at least not be any problems with Intel chipsets. Some are reporting problems with Marvell.. but I haven't tried.

I wanted to use the QNAP as a iSCSI storage for my LAB using a second interface while having full redundancy and get max bandwith (2x1GbE) for my ESXi hosts, and I didn't want that interface routed. At the same time I of course need the possibility to manage the QNAP system via the main interface, which is routed.

This CLI "hack" will at configure the QNAP for a second VLAN interface that will be persistent during reboots. It's not been verified that it works after an upgrade of the firmware, but I presumed it will.

To get this to work I presume you already have the following working:

Network onfigured with LACP with an IP for management with gateway etc.

A small DataVolume created in your StoragePool.

I've created a volume of 10GB called 'SysVol01'

In this volume there should be a .qpkg folder: /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg

QTS v4.1.0 installed (only version I've tested - 2014-06-26)

Know how to login with ssh and edit files with 'vi'.

The configuration and output below indicates that I already have a VLAN 10 for management and I'm adding a VLAN 20 for iSCSI without gateway, and enable JumboFrames.

Click 'read more' to see the CLI configuration...

CLI Configuration

Log into your QNAP with SSH.

Edit QPKG config file to define your own "network package"

vi /etc/config/qpkg.conf

Input the following:

[my-network]
Name = autorun
Version = 0.1
Author = joffer
Date = 2014-06-26
Shell = /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/my-network/autorun.sh
Install_Path = /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/my-network
QPKG_File = my-network.qpkg
Enable = TRUE

Create the folder for your qpkg

mkdir /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/my-network/

Create the autorun.sh script that will configure your aditional network settings

vi /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/my-network/autorun.sh

Populate the script:

#!/bin/bash
# Configure MTU JumboFrames on bond0
# (disabled here, done in WebGUI for main interface)
#/sbin/ifconfig bond0 mtu 9000
# Configure a new VLAN - VLAN ID 20
/usr/local/bin/vconfig add bond0 20
# Configure IP address for this VLAN (not routed) and enable JumboFrames
/sbin/ifconfig bond0.20 10.10.20.101 broadcast 10.10.20.255 netmask 255.255.255.0
/sbin/ifconfig bond0.20 mtu 9000
# General Network Tuning
# Source: http://wiki.qnap.com/wiki/Running_Your_Own_Application_at_Startup#Optimized_networking
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 txqueuelen 50000
/sbin/ifconfig eth1 txqueuelen 50000
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_rfc1337
echo 2 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_frto
echo 2 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_frto_response
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_mtu_probing
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_workaround_signed_windows
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_tw_reuse
echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_tw_recycle
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_low_latency
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_ecn

Log out and restart to verify that it works. You need to log into the box with SSH and run 'ifconfig' or 'ip a' to see the extra network configuration. The WebGUI only shows the default configuration. Example (#6 shows the new VLAN Interface):

[~] # ip a
